One of the first things I did after I finally unboxed my Instant Pot was to try simple recipes. I started out with the water test to build my confidence and then moved onto chicken. It’s hard to mess up chicken so Instant pot chicken recipes were second on my list.
These seasoned chicken breasts are ready in 30 minutes and are perfect for dinner. If you are new-ish to Instant Pot cooking they are a great starter recipe to try. You won’t want to cook chicken any other way after this.
What are Instant Pot chicken breasts?
This recipe is just what the name implies – chicken breasts cooked in the Instant Pot. I like to call mine seasoned chicken breasts because I put my spices on before they cook and they come out juicy, tender and covered in spices.
Hold onto to your hats, because for this easy Instant Pot dinner recipe you only need 3 ingredients. You need:
- chicken breasts
Chicken breasts – You can use frozen or thawed chicken breasts for this recipe – I’ve provided the cooking times for both. You can also use skinless, boneless or if you want to try bone-in chicken breasts, you can do that as well. This recipe is really versatile for any type of chicken breasts you’d like to cook.
Is it safe to cook frozen chicken in instant pot?
Yes! You can cook frozen chicken in the Instant Pot. Pressure cookers cook food quickly which reduces the chance of staying at a dangerous temperature for too long. You can also use your Instant Pot to cook frozen ground beef as well!
Water – You will insert the trivet at the bottom of the Instant Pot and pour in water to pressure cook the chicken. You need 1 – 1 1/2 cup of water for this recipe.
Spices – You can pick your favorite spices to add to your chicken! I went pretty basic with mine and added salt, pepper, garlic powder and homemade Italian seasoning. Feel free to add your favorite seasoning before you cook.
How to cook chicken breasts in the Instant Pot
Once you have all your ingredients, you will also need to grab:
- Instant Pot
- measuring cup
Step 1 – Pour your water into the bottom of the Instant Pot. I used 1 1/2 cups since I have an 8qt, but you can use 1 cup if you have a smaller Instant Pot.
Step 2 – Add your trivet or steamer basket to the pot.
Step 3 – Place the chicken on the trivet or steamer basket.
Step 4 – Season your chicken breasts, making sure to coat all sides of the chicken. Again, feel free to use whatever spices you like here.
Can I stack chicken breasts in instant pot?
Yup! You can!
Step 5 – Close the lid, set the valve to sealing and cook on high for pressure for 7 minutes for thawed chicken breasts.
How long do you cook frozen chicken breast in the instant pot?
For frozen chicken breasts, follow all the steps above but set your Instant Pot to cook on high pressure for 10 minutes.
Instant pot chicken breast bone-in cook times
For bone-in chicken, follow all the steps above but set your Instant Pot to cook on high pressure for 25 minutes. Bone-in chicken is normally thicker and needs the extra cook time.
Step 6 – Allow your Instant pot to come to natural pressure, which will take about 7 minutes. Once the pin drops you can remove the lid.

Allow your chicken to cool and then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Re-heat in the microwave.

How to make any type of chicken breasts in the Instant Pot.
- 4 (6-ounce) chicken breast halves
- 1 ½ cup water (this is the amount for an 8 quart Instant Pot, for a 6 quart, use 1 cup)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Add 1 cup water to the inner pot of the Instant Pot. Place trivet or steamer basket in the Instant Pot.
- Season chicken. Coat on all sides.
- Add chicken to the trivet or steamer basket.
- Close the lid, and turn the pressure valve to sealing.
Set for a high-pressure time of 6-minutes.
- Allow for a complete natural pressure release, which should take about 7 minutes.
- Remove lid and enjoy!
Notes: If using larger chicken breasts, add a couple of extra minutes to the cooking time.
