What Is French Onion Chicken?

French Onion Chicken is a recipe that consists of seasoned chicken breasts smothered in a savory beef broth with cheese on top, giving off the same flavor that you would expect to taste when enjoying a cup of french onion soup. The chicken breast is perfectly moist and delicious, so you never have to worry about eating dry meat with no flavor.

French Onion Chicken Ingredients

You can make the Instant Pot French Onion Chicken with these essential ingredients:

  • Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast. Use chicken without the skin or bone for this dish. It is good for you, and you can avoid the excess calories that the skin adds to the meal by eliminating it.
  • Beef Broth. Adding beef broth to the chicken is the perfect way to keep it moist while giving it that french onion soup taste.
  • Red Wine. The red wine adds more flavor to the broth and is safe to add to this dish, even when serving it to children.
  • Italian Seasoning. You can add Italian seasoning into your Instant Pot with butter that will mix in with your chicken breast.

These are some of the ingredients needed to complete this dish, but you will need a few others, including balsamic vinegar, thyme sprigs, yellow onions, and bay leaves.

Exact Ingredients

Here are the exact ingredients you will need for the recipe:

  • 2 T. unsalted butter
  • 1 T. extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ t. Italian seasoning
  • 1 lbs. yellow onions, sliced root to tip

How to Make French Onion Chicken in the Instant Pot

With about 15 minutes prep time, 10-15 minutes sauté time, and 6 minutes of cooking time, you can have dinner on the table in about 45 minutes. Using the Instant Pot, you can prepare this French Onion Chicken recipe with ease by following these simple steps.

Step 1: Preparation

Select the “Sauté” function and adjust to the medium setting. Add the butter and olive oil and stir until butter is melted and evenly distributed across the bottom. Add onions and sprinkle with the garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste, and stir to combine. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and develop some color, approximately 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Add Liquids

Add the balsamic vinegar and red wine, then deglaze the bottom of the pot with a spatula to release any browned bits. Once the liquid is reduced by one half, stir in the Worcestershire sauce, if using, and the beef broth. Push the “Cancel” button to turn the unit off.

Step 3: Season Chicken Breasts

Generously season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt and black pepper, before adding to the Instant Pot®. Top with the bay leaves and fresh thyme sprigs.

Step 4: Pressure Cook

Add the lid and lock into place, making sure the pressure release valve is set to “Sealing.” Select the “Manual” button on the highest setting and adjust the cook time to 6 minutes.

Step 5: Natural Release Then Quick Release

When the cook time is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes, then do a quick release for any remaining pressure. Once the pin drops and the steam is no longer coming out, carefully remove the lid and discard the bay leaves and woody thyme stems.

Step 6: Add Cheese

Place the mild Provolone slices on top of the chicken breasts and cover the unit with the lid for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the cheese is thoroughly melted. Remove lid and serve immediately with your choice of sides. Enjoy!

What Can I Use Instead of Worcestershire Sauce?

If you do not have Worcestershire sauce at home or do not want to use it, you can use a few different ingredients as alternatives. You can use barbeque sauce, coconut aminos, or a blend of soy sauce and sugar as substitutes for this sauce.

Additionally, you can keep this recipe sugar free by omitting the Worcestershire sauce from the ingredients and directions.

How to Make Beef Broth With Bouillon Cubes

When you only have bouillon cubes and no beef broth, boil a cup of water and add two or three beef bouillon cubes into the water. By doing this, you can easily create a tasty yet simple broth for your chicken.

Easy Side Dish Suggestions

The French Onion Chicken will taste great over a bed of white or brown rice. If you do not like rice, you can make it with a side of buttered noodles while adding a bit of the beef broth to the noodles to give them more flavor. You may also want to eat this tasty chicken with some wholesome vegetables, such as steamed broccoli or peas.
